Like wood

Gordon Brown can’t have an easy time right now. Dreaming about nuclear disarmament and having to take tough questions from David Cameron once a week. And like that’s not enough even Nick Clegg, the Lib.Dem leader, also mocked the PM.

Mr Cameron proceeded to call Mr Brown “a complete phoney”, a remark the Speaker, Michael Martin, forced him to withdraw, and which in any case was not quite right. For Mr Brown looked genuinely and authentically wooden.

Nick Clegg, for the Liberal Democrats, proceeded to embarrass Mr Brown by blaming “the culture of frenzied target setting” for “the horrific events that occurred at Stafford general hospital”.

It is a bad day for Mr Brown when he is beaten not just by Mr Cameron but by Mr Clegg and we suspect that last night in the bunker some even more frenzied target setting was taking place.

Two million britons without work

High numbers:

Figures from the Office of National Statistics released today show 138,400 people joined the dole last month, pushing the number of unemployed to 2.03 million.

In a blizzard of terrible data, the number of people who began claiming jobless benefits in January was revised higher to 93,500 from 73,800. City economists had expected a jump of 84,800 for February and the month’s increase is the fastest since records began in 1971, and leaves the unemployment rate at 6.5pc.

Brown the dreamer

Mr Brown indicated that Britain stands ready to reduce the number of its own warheads as part of a broader negotiation involving the US and Russia.

Multi-lateral reductions in nuclear arsenals should be part of a new “grand global bargain” which will see all states – including Iran – given the possibility to develop civilian atomic power programmes under strict conditions, said Mr Brown.

Dreaming of a world free of nuclear weapons is a nice hing to do, it feels good and you sound like you’re thinking about what’s best for the world when you say it. I also know of people who claim that getting rid off the nuclear weapons is the single most important challenge humanity faces. This is a nice dream, and maybe even a vision worth working for, but that’s also all it should be; A dream.

As long as we have a world where we got one part of it that’s free, with democracy and everything that comes with it, and engaged in a war against organisations supported by totalitarian states the disarming of the west’s nuclear arsenal shouldn’t be anything worth striving for. Imagine a scenario where the west, and Russia, all abolish their nuclear arsenal and a state like North Korea or Iran builds one up instead. That’s not a pretty scenario.

Instead of dreaming about disarming or nuclear weapons we should work towards turning Iran, North Korea and other totalitarian states into democracies. When we’ve done that, then we can talk about disarming.

Immigrants, Out! (According to poll)

In the UK a huge majority – 78 per cent – believed immigrants should be asked to leave the country if they do not have a job, with only 14 per cent disagreeing and eight per cent undecided.

So 78% of the Britons want immigrants to leave the country according to a new poll. I’d call that a strong majority. Not enough with that. Here’s more results from the same poll:

A similar number held the same view in Italy along with sizeable majorities in Spain, Germany and the U.S. and around half of those questioned in France.

Just over half of British adults opposed the right of all EU citizens to settle and work in Britain.

A narrow majority of Germans agreed, while there was slightly more support for the right of free movement and access to Labour markets among French, Italians and Spaniards.

Protectionist and nationalist sentiments seem to be having a feast in the shadow of the economic crisis. That’s a sad sight if you ask me, but totally understandable.

Wanted: Translators

This is also hilarious. Although in a more tragic sort of way:

The most senior Labour Party official in Britain was caught up in a bizarre racism row last night after he was accused of insulting people who speak with a Scottish accent.

A formal complaint of racism was made against Labour General Secretary Ray Collins when he asked for a ‘translation’ of comments made by a man from Glasgow.

Union official Mary Fee was so outraged by the incident at last week’s Scottish Labour Party conference that she protested to Labour officials. And after she contacted Mr Collins directly, he made a grovelling apology and said he had not intended to cause offence.

Seriously? The “‘I’m offended”-line is getting a bit worn out now.

Stop pandering

Fear is the only reason that Muslim groups receive special treatment. Why else would the representatives of around two million people have money and time lavished on them in such an obscenely disproportionate way, while no one much bothers about the peaceable Hindus? And why else would the Government throw £90 million at PVE (Preventing Violent Extremism) – an unaccountable, contradictory, bureaucratically convoluted counter-terrorism initiative that has the authorities snuggle up to homophobic, misogynistic West-haters, just so long as they don’t actually use violence?

British soldiers ridiculed

Following up on this post. A muslim preacher ridiculed the british soldiers that got home and marched through Luton the other day. He called the march through Luton  “a ‘vile parade’ of ‘brutal murderers’.”. His name is Anjem Choudar and I really hope he’s not representative of the majority of muslim preachers.

Firebrand preacher Anjem Choudary praised the Muslims who had protested at yesterday’s parade for the 2nd Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment in Luton.

And in an inflammatory message posted on an Islamic extremist website, Choudary viciously mocked their comrade who was killed by friendly fire in Iraq.

A fun welcome home

Soldiers were marching through Luton today in a homecoming march after they’ve returned from Iraq. One would thinkt that there’s wouldn’t be much to write about such an event besides that people should thank them for their service, for fighting for democracy, for helping to build up Iraq. But that’s not all that transpired during the march.

A homecoming march by soldiers returning from Iraq was today marred by ugly scenes after Muslim anti-war protesters hurled abuse at parading soldiers.

Around 20 men in Islamic dress yelled ‘terrorists’ and held placards denouncing the soldiers as ‘butchers of Basra’ and ‘baby killers’ as they marched through Luton.

Other signs described the 200 men and women from the 2nd Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment as ‘Criminals, Murderers Terrorists’.

Disgraceful? Yes, quite.

The ‘Special Relationship’ (Part Three)

The Telegraph has had sources tell them that President Obama was tired.

Sources close to the White House say Mr Obama and his staff have been “overwhelmed” by the economic meltdown and have voiced concerns that the new president is not getting enough rest.
